Deal with Stress/Anxiety - The Healthy Way

This Pandemic has had a major effect on the world. It has taken a toll on our mental health and we are constantly living in a state of fear and uncertainty. Watching and listening to news, working and juggling with multiple stressful situations amid pandemic can be very overwhelming and cause strong emotions.

Considering social distancing and being at home are the necessary precautions to prevent the spread of the virus, it can still make us feel isolated and lonely which can result in anxiety and sometimes even depression.

 

Stress and anxiety are a result of unprocessed emotions and feelings. In order to deal with anything, the first very step is acknowledgement. Acknowledging and accepting your feelings without judgement will set you free. Accepting the feeling of uneasiness or loneliness is the first step and telling yourself that IT’S OKAY TO NOT BE OKAY ALWAYS, will surely help.

Knowing our triggers, emotions and developing coping strategies is very important. Having a healthy coping mechanisms will make you and your loved ones more strong and resilient. Here are some techniques which you can incorporate in order to deal with stress and anxiety

  

Limit the exposure.

As much as we love to be updated with the news and the surroundings, too much exposure can take a toll on our mental well-being. Limiting the time you check the news and even limiting the sources can help reduce the stress around the situation.

Be conscious about how and how much you talk about the current scenario, it must not be the center of every conversation. While it’s easier to give in to the fear and stress, the healthy way to deal with any stressful situation is to identify the controllable and un-controllable variants. Letting go of the uncontrollable variables will help reduce the stress. 

 

Take care of your body and mind

Taking good care of your body is another important aspect. Here are some ways you can do that

  • Take deep breaths or Stretch,
  • Eat healthy and balanced meals
  • Exercise/meditate regularly
  • Get plenty of sleep
  • Continue with routine preventive measures

UNWIND

Make time for the things that bring you joy, be it a hobby, interest or simply talking to someone. Do more of what makes you happy and bring you a sense of fulfillment. It’s easier to shift the focus from unpleasant situations by being more present and grateful. And if you don’t have a hobby or interest, this can be great time to experiment and try out different things or activities.

 

Don’t Jump on the Bandwagon

Since the pandemic started, social media has been flooded with how you can be more productive and everyone has been posting out how they are keeping themselves busy. While it’s good to do things and be productive, giving in it to the pressure is not. Comparison is always a losing game.

Make time for the things you enjoy, do them at your own pace and the only person’s progress you should be worried about is YOU.

Stay Connected

Stay connected to your family and friends, we are all going through the same thing. It’s easier to take care of your loved ones if you come from a healthy mental space yourself. 

Seek Help, if needed

While living in a world where vulnerability is often mistaken as weakness, suppressing emotions is glorified and a conversation around mental health is a taboo can be very upsetting, seeking help is a trait of a strong person.

Seek help if needed, there are thousands of therapists online willing to listen and help you understand and solve your problems.
